looking southDuring the warm summer months we offer expertly-guided four-night hiking holidays in the mountains that surround the ranch.

These holidays are designed for those who like to stretch their legs in the wilderness but prefer to return to a luxury cabin, a hot shower and good food at the end of each day.

Mountain vistas and alpine wildflowers

Wildflowers

The scale and magnificence of the mountains that surround our ranch is remarkable.

Remote, imperious, cruel and dazzling, they are every bit as spectacular as the Rockies in Banff or Jasper, and without the crowds.

For our hikes, we use one of our off-road vehicles for the ascent into the alpine.

A view from one of our summer hikesThat way we get to spend the day ridge-walking and admiring the spectacular views rather than hiking up through the forest from the valley floor.

During July the snow finally melts up high, except in a few shaded areas, and wildflowers - Indian paintbrush, wild lupins and many others - blanket the meadows.

At this time it is also possible to see lonely high-elevation bears. All our hiking guides are local and know the area around the ranch well. They are also trained bear guides.

"There are no words to describe our stay"

Bicknells at the topJane & Anthony Bicknell from Putney in London came for a four-night hiking holiday in July 2010. We took them up three different mountain trails. This is what they wrote in the guest book:

"We've had a wonderful time. Thank you for everything. You have a very special thing here. We will be back for the grizzlies and everything else.

"There are no words to describe our stay - the memories will always stay with us!"

Summer itinerary

A view of the mountains near Grizzly Bear RanchA typical summer day at the ranch would see you waking up in your own cabin next to our river.

Kristin, who spent several years cooking on the diplomatic circuit, serves a fresh, healthy breakfast.

After breakfast we head up into the high country. This is an unforgettable experience, redolent of the times before the settlers arrived in the new world.

Lunch is a picnic of home-made sandwiches, fruit and biscuits that we take along on our day tour.

We especially like to hike high-mountain ridges and alpine meadows off the beaten track.

Dinner may be a sit-down affair in the main house or a barbeque by the river.
